This section has been included to illustrate that the correct recitation of the Qur'an is a fundamental duty of every Muslim. Yes, there may be language barriers or you may not have had the appropriate guidance on how to recite the Quran correctly from a young age. But ultimately, it is your responsibility to learn how to recite the Quran in the way that was taught by our beloved Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). We cannot simply recite the Quran in any manner; reciting the Quran is also a form of respect.

  1. Always remember, you are reciting the very words of Allah. He is the One who is talking to us and He is the One who is protecting and preserving the Qur'an daily.
  2. Everything in life has a certain code and a structure. You cannot simply recite the Qur'an in the manner that pleases you, rather you should recite the Qur'an in the manner taught by the Prophet (PBUH).
  3. Tajweed is the focal point of the Qur'an. To recite the Qur'an correctly, you must have a strong understanding of the tajweed rules. This is essential for any hifdh student.
  4. For many hifdh students, tajweed may not be their strongest point. Many are taught the Qur'an in a certain manner which does not reflect the true regulations of tajweed. This must be overcome.
  5. There is no such thing as the 'perfect tajweed." Possessing a strong understanding of tajweed requires a lot of commitment and dedication to learn and apply the rules into one's recitation.
  6. As a hifdh student, daily practice in Qur'anic recitation is essential in developing one's application of tajweed rules. Recite, record and repeat. Try this daily.
  7. One of the best methods to acquire a strong foundation of tajweed within your recitation is by listening frequently to renowned and qualified Qur'anic reciters, past or present.
  8. Reciting the Qur'an correctly with tajweed requires a huge amount of discipline and understanding. Most importantly, you are reviving the manner in which the Qur'an was recited by the companions of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).
  9. Reflecting upon the Qur'an is just as important as reciting the Qur'an correctly. Some would arguably say that reflection upon the words of the Qur'an is the most important duty.
  10. Learning the Arabic language is crucial if you wish to understand and reflect upon the verses of the Qur'an. Every hifdh student should strive to gain a strong understanding of Arabic.
